14 Characters (wooden pawns)
Favorites cards (26)
Vote cards (32)
Ambition cards (16)
Player’s color cards and score tokens (2-8)
Gameboard (bigger in real)
Setup Place the board on the table, and the 14 Characters next to it, except the Jester, who is immediately placed on floor 3 of the Castle. Give each player:- a card and a score token of the same color (placed on square 20)- a random Favorites card, face down (hecan look at it)- Vote cards: 1 Yes (crown), 1 Stomachache (silhouette), and NO cards according to the number of players: 4 cards for 2-3 players, 3 for 4 players, 2 for 5-8 players. Placement Starting with the 1st player (designated as you wish), each player in clockwise order places a Character on floors 1 to 4 of the Castle. No more than 4 Characters/floor. When all players have placed as many Characters, the remaining Characters go to floor 0. Game Starting with the 1st player, each player in clockwise order moves a single Character up a single floor. No more than 4 Characters/floor. WC: a Character can be moved up to one of the WCs on floors 3 and 4 (to the right of the Castle) only if the WC is empty and if the floor itself already contains the limit of 4 characters. Subsequently, a player can use his turn to take a Character out of his WC, only on the same floor, and if the floor limit is no longer reached. Vote If a player moves a Character up to the Throne Room, a vote is taken immediately: all players place one of their Vote cards face down in front of them simultaneously. Then they are all revealed: - Refusal: a single Refusal (or more), the Character is not crowned. The first refused is placed in the dungeon to the left of floor 3, the second in the dungeon on floor 2, the third in the dungeon on floor 1, the following ones in the box. - Stomachache: if only one (or more) Stomachache was voted, the election is canceled anyway. The Character goes back down to floor 5. - Yes: if all players voted Yes, the Character is crowned. This is the end of the round. Each player reveals their Favorites card and scores points according to the value of the floors they are on. Characters in the toilets or in the box give 0 points, those in the dungeons lose as many points as the floor of the dungeon. - The Jester: if the Jester is crowned, the points are reversed. Players lose points according to the value of their Favorites' floors, and they gain points for their Favorites in the dungeons. If the Jester is refused, he returns to floor 3 and remains in play. In the event of a Stomacache vote, he returns to floor 5. WARNING: in all cases, the NO and Stomacache vote cards played by the players are lost for the round and put aside. The YES cards are always kept. End of the game The game is played in 3 rounds. At the beginning of each round, we start again exactly as at the beginning of the 1st: secret favorites card for each, jester on floor 3, placement of the characters on floors 1 to 4, then play. At the end of the 3rd round, after the 3rd coronation, the player who totals the most points is the winner.

Variations
The Emissary of the Empire (2 players) : to win, you also have to beat this fictional player, about whom you know everything, but who starts way ahead. A thoughtful challenge. Playable solo, by creating 2 or 3 fictional players. The Royal Wedding (2 to 8 players) : two queens/kings to crown in each round! And for the second, your Favorites card is known to everyone… Team Royalty (2 to 8 players – or maybe more): teams of 2 players… each with different Favorites, but with common Vote cards! Only the lowest score of the two players is retained. You will have to agree and coordinate well…
Options
Ambition : Each player chooses one Ambition card from two at the beginning of each round. This is an end-of-round objective to gain points but also to protect yourself. The Outcast : you play with only 5 Favorites (the one with a gray seal on your card does not count for the scoring).
High ? When placing, trying to put your Favorites on high floors can seem like a good option. Yes, if a King is elected quickly, and if you think that other players have some of your Favorites, or that they really tend to save their NO. Otherwise, negative dungeons are yours… Also prepare to use your Stomacache to force a double attempt at crowning one of your Favorites. Low ? When placing, putting your Favorites on the lower floors may seem odd. No: you will wait for the NOs and Stomacaches to fall with other Characters (dungeons!) while you make your Favorites climb each turn. Prepare to wear out your NOs and Stomacaches, too bad. This strategy is also valid if you want to play the Jester. Jester trick ? If you are behind in the score, or if your Favorites are placed low or in the dungeons, or if you guess that players are too systematically placing their Favorites at the top, play the Jester. Keep your Stomacache well to be able to counter a first NO. Ideally, guess the tacit complicity of another player in a situation similar to yours: with two accomplices, raising the Jester to the Throne Room is quick! Cautious ? All players are tempted to save their NOs and Stomacaches, even if the Character to be crowned does not suit them. They bet that there will be another player who will play one of his cards in their place... Beware! This is how many illegitimate Kings, which almost no one wants, are crowned in the very first rounds... You have been warned! Discuss ? You can very well discuss with other players. To lie, to be frank, to influence... As you wish. But in any case, the game absolutely forbids showing all or part of your Favorites card! You can ask a player what or how many Vote cards he has left. He is not obliged to answer you. Do anything ? You can try. At least the other players won't understand anything about your game or your Favorites. But in moderation anyway...
Climb the social ladder to conquer the Throne Among the 13 Characters in the game (plus a Jester), placed in the Castle of Vive le Roi! each player has his 6 Favorites… secret, of course. On his turn, a player simply moves a Character up one floor. If the Character reaches the top, the throne room, the players vote: a unanimous Yes and the Character is crowned King! Each player then scores points according to the position of his Favorites in the Castle, and the round is over. And the game is played in 3 rounds. Is that all? Yes! But the placement and movements of the Characters, the risky management of the King's refusal cards, the manipulation of the other players regarding votes and Favorites, and the permanent interaction, create a unique game of atmosphere, strategy and bluff. Many variations allow you to adapt the game to your desires - more strategic, more devious, more competitive… Vive le Roi ! is as fun and captivating with family as with experts.
